Open hearts and minds

Its a fabulously beautiful Spring that feels like summer day here in the east. A sandbox, bubbles, soccer kind of day.  Also a shoe tying kind of day, and a buttoning my shirt cuz I'm Mommy's handsome boy kinda day.

All of which we were not sure our son would be able to do without years of therapy based on the information provided to us 2 1/2 yrs ago, and we were OK with that. Although he was behind for his age, it now truly seems that was all due to lack of experience or instruction. In just under 2 yrs his fine and gross motor skills have caught up to and in some cases surpass his peers.

So I felt I should write to those of you who are or know somebody considering adoption and say to you Open your hearts. Some of the words you read or hear may be scary, but it could turn out to be the most incredible joy of your life!

To those who may be considering adoption and the social worker sitting across the table from you or on the phone it what may seem worlds away, and she says to you, "Have you considered Special Needs Adoption?" and then you freeze, I am implore you to open you heats and minds.  There are no guarantees with biology, don't wait for the perfect on paper child to show up in your inbox, when the the cure for the ones that seem like they may need a little more attention may just be your love.

Brandee, I was just thinking the same thing the other day. I was thinking about how a family was going forward with trying to adopt our David, and then they changed their minds, which put him in our arms. I don't know for sure the reasons why they backed out of it (could be financial, or family situations changed), but I do know they submitted an extensive list of questions about his medical background, and once they received their answers, they decided not to go forward. I am still in awe that someone passed on adopting him (he was a "waiting child" so also considered "special needs"), but grateful that he is with us!
